Sinclair Patterns: Carmel Tulip Style Knit Top With Pockets

Spring is in the air, and the weather in Victoria is (finally!) starting to warm up. Sinclair Patterns new Carmel tulip hem top pattern is perfect for the change in seasons!

Fun fact: This pattern was the winner of the inspiration competition in the Sinclair Patterns facebook group, where the designer asked everyone to submit and vote for the pattern they want to see!

The Sinclair Patterns Carmel Top is a tulip style top with overlapping front that is perfect for dressing up any outfit, and is super easy to change up to suit all seasons!

3 sleeve lengths:short, 3/4 or long

2 finishing options for long sleeve: hemmed or cuffed

4 neck options: banded crew neck, hood, cowl, cowl with tab

Fabric selection: Light to medium weight knit fabric with at least 30-50% horizontal and 10-20% vertical stretch. Recommended fabrics may be brushed polyester, sweater knits, liverpool, lightweight cotton or bamboo lycra

Carmel tunic length with side pockets and cowl, cuffed long sleeves in DBP and cotton lycra

The Carmel is semi fitted at the shoulders and bust and semi relaxed at the waist. It also has a center back seam for shaping and some sway back adjustment. Instead of turning up the hems and stitching, The Carmel are finished with a facing, which I feel gives much nicer results (more even looking in my hands!) compared to the former method.

I love where the tunic length hits me, I cut a size 0 petite version. It is perfect for layering over leggings on these cool spring days, and is very easy to dress up or down. The pockets hit me at just the right spot and are roomy enough for my massive keychain (and keys!), perfect for when I don't want to carry around a bag!

Carmel Top length, banded crew neck short sleeves in amber yellow cotton lycra

I made this short sleeve version during testing, before some slight fit changes. I also had some struggles with sewing the facings in place then. I would suggest pressing a memory crease in the facings as well as the sleeves before sewing the sides together, I think it would have made it a lot easier for me! I still like the fit though and will be perfect for any 27 °C days in summer! I paired this with Pattern Union Hannah Culottes :) I love how gorgeous this amber yellow cotton lycra is, great for adding a touch of colour to any outfit!

Carmel tunic length with side pocket and hood, 3/4 sleeve in mystery knit

This version is made from a mystery knit I bought from an op shop for $1.50 earlier this year: I love how the colours (and little babies!) look in this pattern! The fabric has amazing horizontal stretch but no vertical stretch - which I only realised after cutting out the main body pieces. I lengthened the sleeve by an inch to account for the lack of vertical stretch. I lined the hood with another op shop find.

Other than getting the hang of the facing (the pattern does have very good instructions in her tutorials), I would say that the Carmel is a very quick and easy sew - and I'm someone who takes an hour to cut out a plain tee from a plain fabric! I would rate it 9/10 in terms of fit, ease to sew and the top notch instructions!
